It's not just the vibrant Sorbian culture that makes Bautzen worth visiting. This town was once more important than Dresden, and more recently the town gained notoriety for its "Stasi prison" and was associated with political persecution. Two decades after German reunification, however, the town is now showing a completely different side. The old town has been restored to an excellent standard, and lots of little shops, cafes and restaurants make this a great place to go for a stroll and pass the time. What's more, the town is a great base for excursions to the Upper Lusatian Highlands, the Zittau Mountains, to the Czech Republic or to the Heath and Pond Landscape of Upper Lusatia, with its UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
Thanks to a fantastic location you don't only need to decide where to go, but also how you want to get there. After all, you needn't always drive. Discovering this region on foot or by bike is also highly worthwhile. A great day out is guaranteed at Kleinwelka, with its Dinosaur Park, Mini World and Labyrinth. In the Ortenburg you'll find the Sorbian Museum, Folk Theatre and the famous Rietschel Gable. Immerse yourself in the natural surroundings of the Upper Lusatian Highlands, the Zittau Mountains and the Heath and Pond Landscape of Upper Lusatia, with its UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and Sorbian villages. The Spree and Frog Cycle Routes are ideal for active visitors, as is the border trail between Sohland and the Czech Republic. And there are, of course, swimming pools, thermal baths, cinemas and a range of sports facilities.
